Ice cubes are rare, but if you ask almost every place will get you more. I lived in Berlin for 2 years.

People who enjoy museums, history and cultural locales are unlikely to be looking for "funky" places.

When you grow up and become a true adult you may realize this. KaDeWe's food level was still a great find - unique gourmet items from all over the world to munch on.

The rest of the place is overpriced and pretentious. I look forward to returning to Germany , minus the "funk".

I met delightful, helpful people as I used my limited German. You were right about the positive response at any effort to speak the German language.

I received many perks for my efforts. While we seem to have very different tastes we both agree it is a wonderful place to visit.

Dresden , Hamburg and Sans Souci were well worth the time it took to get there, obviously not doable in 2 days.

I thought the home I grew up in was old, but years is nothing compared to places still used as homes and businesses in Europe.

We're also heading that way around then. Have just discovered on official website that Reichstag dome will be closed from 4th to 9th April.

Bear in mind if relevant to you!. We've been to Berlin before. Really enjoyed 3-hour boat trip on river and canals as you see the city from a different angle literally.

We do like museums too tho' and recommend Pergamon and if you like German expressionists Bruecke museum which is in a posh suburb so you see a different part of Berlin life too This time we're going to look at Story-of-Berlin on Ku-damm.

Supposed to be good. The monumental area is wonderful: Unter den Linden , Gendarmenmarkt etc.

We're looking forward to exploring neighbourhoods of the old East Berlin this time: Prenzlauerberg, Oranienburgerstrasse etc. You'll love the city for sure!

Try and see the film Goodbye Lenin before you go, to see the impact of the end of the GDR on its citizens. Just back from Berlin.

Here are the main things to see in my opinion:. The most beautiful monument in Berlin. To see day and night it's great when illuminated.

From here take Unter den Linden and Friedrichstrass to walk to. Then go to the Alte Nationalgalerie , see the portrait gallery.

Take a bus or a taxi to the Scheunenviertel in Mitte , walk around there are several galleries in this place.

In the evening have dinner at Papparazzi Danziger Str. Enjoy the nice shops and restaurants. And yes go to the Pergammonmuseum.

Reichstag Dome. Brandenburg Gate and surrounding are. Checkpoint Charlie museum ditto and it isn't very well organised.

Visit the old air raid bunker now utilized as a Halloween House: "Gruselbunker", the gruesome bunker, with skeletons and such.

The Reichstag is not to be missed. Don't miss the dome, even though you have to wait. If you are interested in Nazi era history, the "Topographie des Terrors" is not to be missed.

Having spent 2 weeks in Berlin last summer I highly recommend that you check with your concierge about an all American speaking bus tour.

A walk down the Kerfurstendamm past the statues in the median and the bombed Kaiser Wilhelm church gives you an interesting people-watching overview.

You will see just beyond the church and before the huge Europa Center Full of shops and restaurants. That walk will take you to the KaDeWe.

Check out the floor with the food, deli and grocery selections. You can also eat some lucious foods there for lunch.

They have gourmet food and candy selections from all over the world and freshly made delicious desserts. It's a feast for the eyes as well as the palate!

Ice cubes are rare, but if you ask almost evry place will get you more. Check out the Platzdamer Platz and the Reichstag - the view of the city from the top of the dome is wonderful.

Look closely for rectanglar patches - they are patches from bullets and mortar fire. The Brandenburger Tor Gate , the Goddess of Victory, Soviet Memorial and more are in the former East Berlin along the Unter der Linden, a beautiful, tree lined street with embassies, coffee shops and exclusive hotels.

It is worthwhile to pick up a photo guide book as the pictures are more beautiful than anything you can take and also helpful for choosing places to tour.

There are plenty of museums and the Schloss Charlottenburg Palace as well as old cathedrals. I barely touched the tip of the iceberg, but thoroughly loved my time there.
